The election to form the 2026 executive committee of Nabiganj Press Club has been completed peacefully amid a vibrant and enthusiastic atmosphere.
As per schedule, voting was supposed to begin at 11am on Tuesday at the Dakbungalow premises. However, proceedings began with a condolence motion following the death of former three-time Prime Minister and BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia. A doa and milad were held seeking prayers for her, and members wore black badges as a mark of mourning. Voting eventually began at 11:30am and continued until 2:30pm.
A total of 42 voters cast their ballots, with 25 candidates contesting for six posts. Chief Election Commissioner Fazlur Rahman officially announced the results after counting.
In the president’s race, Daily Manabzamin staff reporter M.A. Bashit and S.R. Chowdhury Selim received equal votes—21 each. Following mutual consent, it was decided that both would share the position for six months each within the one-year term: Selim will serve from 1 January to 30 June, while Bashit will hold office from 1 July to 31 December.
A similar outcome came in the treasurer’s post, where Shahriar Ahmed Shawon and Sagar Ahmed both secured 21 votes each. They will also share the role, with Sagar serving from January to June and Shawon from July to December.
Other elected office bearers include Shah Sultan Ahmed as Vice President, Md. Alomgir Mia as General Secretary, and Jewel Ahmed as Joint General Secretary.
Eight members were elected as executive committee members. The election was conducted under the supervision of Chief Election Commissioner and former Habiganj Press Club president Fazlur Rahman, assisted by former president Russell Chowdhury and press club member Oliur Rahman Oli.
Current club president ATM Salam and General Secretary Shani Ahmed Chowdhury extended full cooperation in conducting the polls. Several senior journalists and local dignitaries observed the election, praising its fair and festive environment.
