Police have arrested one person after a teenage boy was brutally tortured in Tahirpur, Sunamganj, over an allegation of stealing a silver anklet. The victim, Hafiz Uddin (17) from Puran Laurergarh village under Badaghat union, was reportedly beaten and tortured inside a shop after being forcibly taken there.
According to family members, several men led by local resident Amir Uddin accused the boy of stealing an anklet that had gone missing months earlier. On Monday evening (29 December), they allegedly tied the teenager inside a shop and repeatedly tortured him in an attempt to force a confession.
The torture was horrific — needles were pushed under his fingernails and toenails, his body was pinched with pliers, and he was beaten multiple times. Hafiz fainted twice due to the pain, yet the attackers reportedly continued, even pouring cold water on his injuries to force a confession.
Hearing about the incident, family members and local representatives rushed to the spot, rescued the boy and admitted him to Bishwambharpur Upazila Health Complex that same night.
The following day, the boy’s uncle filed a written complaint naming Amir Uddin, his sons, and several others. Police later arrested Amir and registered the case.
Sunamganj Superintendent of Police ABM Zakir Hossain condemned the incident, saying no one has the right to take the law into their own hands. He added that orders have been given to arrest the remaining accused quickly and submit the chargesheet without delay.
