A mild earthquake was felt in Sylhet on Tuesday afternoon, sending brief tremors across parts of the city around 5:32pm.
According to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the quake measured 4.0 on the Richter scale. The Bangladesh Meteorological Department said the epicentre was in Gowainghat of Sylhet, at a depth of around 10 kilometres. The centre of the tremor was located roughly 21 kilometres north of Sylhet city.
There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage to property.
Local administration officials said they are monitoring the situation closely. Residents have been advised to remain calm while staying alert.
With Tuesday’s tremor, Sylhet has experienced four earthquakes so far in 2026. Earlier this month, on February 3, strong tremors were also felt across Bangladesh, including Sylhet, following a powerful 5.9-magnitude earthquake in Myanmar. However, officials noted that only four quakes this year had their epicentres in or around Sylhet.
