Police in Sylhet’s Gowainghat upazila have recovered an old, unexploded mortar shell from a scrap shop in Jaflong. The device was discovered on Sunday afternoon (28 December) at a shop in the Jaflong Bazaar area.
Investigators believe the mortar shell may date back to Bangladesh’s Liberation War period, although a detailed examination will confirm this.
According to police and local sources, residents first noticed a suspicious, shell-like object lying abandoned in front of a scrap shop owned by Bachchu Miah. Concerned by what they saw, they immediately informed Gowainghat police. A team led by Sub-Inspector Abdul Hannan rushed to the scene and safely recovered the device.
Confirming the incident, Gowainghat Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Moniruzzaman said the mortar shell has been taken into police custody. Additional police have been deployed in the area to ensure public safety, and further action will be decided after consultation with higher authorities.
