Bangladeshi-origin politician Doly Begum has made headlines once again in Canadian politics, this time by stepping into the federal arena after serving seven years in Ontario’s provincial legislature (MPP).

The ruling Liberal Party of Canada has officially nominated her as its candidate for the upcoming by-election in the Scarborough Southwest riding. The announcement was made on Tuesday (February 3, 2026), local time, according to the Liberal party of Canada press release.

The seat became vacant following the resignation of veteran Member of Parliament and former minister Bill Blair, who was recently appointed as Canada’s next High Commissioner to the United Kingdom by Prime Minister Mark Carney.

Until now, Begum served as Deputy Leader of the opposition New Democratic Party (NDP) in Ontario. Her decision to join the Liberals and work under Prime Minister Carney is being viewed by political observers as a significant shift in Canada’s political landscape.

Originally from Moulvibazar in Bangladesh’s Sylhet division, Doly Begum grew up along the banks of the Manu River. She moved to Canada at the age of 12 with her parents, Raja Miah and Joba Begum, and her brother. Overcoming early challenges, she went on to earn a degree in Political Science from the University of Toronto and a master’s in Development Administration and Planning from University College London (UCL).

In 2018, she made history by becoming the first person of Bangladeshi origin elected as an MPP in Canada. Since then, she has emerged as a strong voice in Queen’s Park and secured three consecutive victories in provincial elections with large margins.

In a statement, Doly Begum said Prime Minister Carney’s “forward-looking economic plan” inspired her decision at a time of economic uncertainty.

“I have fought for the people of this community for the past seven years. Now it is time to play a stronger role at the federal level. Under Prime Minister Mark Carney’s leadership, I want to help build a more united and affordable Canada,” she said.

Liberal Party President Sachit Mehra praised her nomination, calling Doly Begum not only a skilled politician but also “a symbol of public trust.” He added that her inclusion would further strengthen the party.

Toronto-based community figure Delowar Elahi said the nomination demonstrates that integrity and public engagement remain vital in Canadian politics. “Prime Minister Carney has brought a capable leader into his team,” he noted.

Experts believe Doly Begum’s rise represents more than personal success—it serves as a major inspiration for the new generation of Bangladeshis in Canada. A potential victory in the federal parliament could further enhance the influence of the Bangladeshi community.
