Sylhet’s streets have once again filled with demonstrators demanding swift justice for the killing of Sharif Usman Hadi. Members of “Inqilab Moncho” returned to the streets calling for the immediate arrest and exemplary punishment of those involved, vowing to continue their movement until their demands are met.
Protesters have urged authorities to file the charge sheet within the next three days and to complete the trial proceedings at the Speedy Trial Tribunal within 30 working days.
The demonstration began around 2pm on Sunday (28 December) at Chowhatta in Sylhet city, with participants rallying under the banners of Inquilab Moncho, Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST), and various other local organisations. Protesters said similar programs, including road blockades, were also being observed across major divisional cities in the country with the same demands. They warned that if the trial process is not expedited, they will remain on the streets.
Speakers at the rally alleged that those responsible for Hadi’s murder were still beyond the reach of law, heightening fear and frustration among the public. They also claimed the accused had fled the country and accused the government of delaying justice.
As the protest continued, demonstrators chanted slogans demanding justice for Hadi. The blockade caused severe traffic congestion in Chowhatta, leaving city residents stuck in long tailbacks and facing significant hardship.
Pedestrian Saiful said they, too, want justice but questioned whether public suffering should be the price. “There are many peaceful ways to protest without blocking roads and causing suffering to ordinary people,” he said.
A doctor named Ibrahim echoed the same concern. While he acknowledged the demand for justice as justified, he noted that public suffering is turning people away from the movement. “There are elderly people, patients heading to hospitals, and working people rushing to offices. Many are in real trouble,” he said.
Earlier, on Saturday (27 December), Inquilab Moncho also staged a day-long demonstration at the same spot.
